Chapter 7 - The Screamer

When Amy saw a vast set of studded iron doors framed by a pair of open fangs, she knew they had arrived at their destination.

The Screamer was a dark rollercoaster, enclosed within a structure with the façade of a gothic castle. The ride lived up to its name every time the carriages ripped along its coiling rails to complete a long, complex circuit. It was filled with so many inversions, steep drops and fiercely tight bends it would have even the hardiest of people clutching at their stomachs.

Packed with state-of-the-art special effects, the ride would scare the life out of anyone who was game enough to try it out. Terrifying animatronic monsters and bone-chilling ghouls would lunge out of the dark as horrific noises filled the air. Incredible lighting dazzled people at every turn, including holographic scenes which would make everyone scream when the coaster passed through them.

This definitely wasn’t an experience which Amy recalled with even an ounce of joy. In fact, she had to wonder why Dreamgate’s system had incorporated it into what was supposed to be a date with Sasin’s charismatic leader.

There wasn't a lot she could do about it now, though, as it seemed this was where things would continue to unfold.

Shuffling to a stop just inside the entrance into the building, the young women joined the end of a lengthy queue. Amy recognized the stone tunnel that snaked around the ground floor to accommodate the long lines waiting for the coaster. She could see deep alcoves behind the chain safety fence where ghoulish figurines would lurk before releasing ear-piercing screeches.

The atmosphere was filled with the nervously eager voices of people chatting as they shuffled towards the station where they would board the ride.

Amy cast her eyes up the line and saw a group of adolescent males standing several feet ahead of them. Dressed in jackets and heavily ripped jeans, they were like the type of visitors who came to the park just for the adrenalin-pumping rides.

The instant she identified them, she recalled the memorable scene which had unfolded here a decade ago. This was almost exactly the same set of circumstances which had led to Amy meeting her mysterious teenage lothario. Within a few seconds, she would see a face so handsome it would become permanently etched into her mind....

Only it wasn’t there anymore.

Blinking a few times, Amy realized she couldn’t recall any details of the young man’s features. It seemed time had robbed her of those precious memories and now all she had was a vague recollection of his general appearance. Desperately racking her brain, all she could come up with were his proportions and the basics of the outfit he had been wearing.

As her heart sank in her chest, the other girls began scanning the line to find the young men which Amy had already located. Trying to look nonchalant, they were avoiding direct eye contact as they looked around until one of them spotted the group of youths.
